Aside from our elite sports students that compete and represent the college academies, we are also recognised as an outstanding centre of excellence and academy by Sport Leaders UK. Within college we run both the Community and Higher Sport Leaders awards, the latter giving students 30 UCAS points when completed. As part of these qualifications the students complete volunteering hours both within the college and externally, for community clubs, schools, and many other organisations. We also have a great partnership with Hartlepool Sport Development, and especially their new Volunteer Co-ordinator, deploying the students into placements and getting high quality hours.
In college we have a Student Sport leadership Team that are recruited each year from the current students. They work with College Sport Maker Joe Cooke to adapt and promote the recreational offer in college, and also organise and deliver charity events throughout the year. Through the extensive recreational sport programme we offer we also run an activator programme, in which students are trained to deliver activity, and then take responsibility for that programme within the college offer, promoting our ‘student led’ activity.

Below are some quotes from organisations we have helped in the last 12 month:
I just want to thank your volunteers for this morning they did a fantastic job and they all should be proud of themselves! We could not have managed today without them! Every single one of them are a credit to the college and are so professional! They carried out every task that was asked of them and they were super with the children! Thanks so much again (the next gala is soon and I will be requesting the same volunteers again if possible!)
— Laura Lidster, Hartlepool Learn to Swim Coordinator
Wow, wow, wow! The volunteers were fantastic and they have helped make our sports day a real event.
— Blackhall Primary School
The volunteers were absolutely fantastic. They were so professional and they delivered a great event for our children. Thank you so much and see you again next year.
— Stranton Primary School
It can be very daunting working with children who have special educational needs but your students coped brilliantly and planned a fully inclusive Olympic sports day. We had a brilliant time, thanks you.
— Catcote School
From current students:
Volunteering has given me more confidence to work with different groups of people.
I was unsure about how to adapt games for young children but the HSL course gave me the confidence and ideas about what to do. It was a brilliant course that I will use now that I’m going to University to study Sports coaching.
During my time at college I have volunteered in arrange of sports event in a range of different roles. I have been a time keeper in the swimming gala, helped out in the media team at Sainsbury School Games and coached mini tennis in a local primary school. I didn’t know volunteering could be done in such a wide range of roles and I have enjoyed all of them!
