Hartlepool Sixth Form College

International Team

A very warm welcome to Hartlepool Sixth Form College.

Julie Collings

As Vice Principal for Curriculum, Quality and Student Support I support the Principal in the running and strategic management of the College.

Together with the Principal, I work with Programme Area Managers and Curriculum Developers to quality assure all aspects of Teaching, Learning and Assessment. We work as a team to ensure the 16-19 curriculum is effective, high quality and meets the needs of all learners, enabling them to progress to a positive destination in line with their learning aim.

Leading on student care, guidance and intervention, I am responsible for attracting, retaining and ensuring the success of all our students. This involves leading and managing the College Student Support Services and ensuring that these services actively support and enhance learning and positively contribute to improving student outcomes. Together with the Student Achievement Tutor Team and Learning Support Team, we ensure that every student is supported pastorally and academically to maximise their success. As the College Designated Senior Person for Safeguarding and Child Protection I ensure that outstanding safeguarding and promotion of British Values is embedded within the college.

In addition, I lead on the management of the College International Strategy. We have a large number of Chinese students who come to the College to study A Levels before they progress to universities. I manage the International team and leading on the planning of International visits and International Recruitment.

I started my teaching career as a Business Studies teacher in 2005. Prior to that I worked for 10 years as a manager and trainer for a high street bank. Education, enterprise and employability are all things I value very highly in addition to ensuring that everyone has equal opportunity regardless of background. I love the diversity of my role and it gives me a real opportunity to ensure that curriculum and pastoral teams work very closely together to ensure the success of our students. I am lucky to work with such lovely students in a College with excellent facilities and incredibly hard working staff.

Anna Carruthers

My role at HSFC involves supporting International students in relation to their academic progress, progression and their broader College experience. I lead the International Team and work closely with the Vice Principal to ensure all International students have a high quality educational and cultural experience whilst at our College.

I oversee the coordination of the tutorial programme and UCAS process for International students. We work hard to ensure our students are ready to move onto their chosen course at Higher Education both academically and personally when they complete their studies.

I also quality assure all aspects of the International Department and ensure we comply with our Tier 4 Licence holder duties as stipulated by the UK Visas and Immigration Department. This involves liaising with agencies including the Home Office who demand exceptionally high monitoring and compliance checks.

I organise and manage the recruitment of host families and provide appropriate guidance to all those involved in supporting our students. Ensuring the health and safety of students at College and in their host accommodation is my responsibility and I work closely with host families to ensure relevant DBS and home safety checks have been carried out. In addition, I coordinate a programme of educational and cultural trips throughout the year and frequent social activities for our students. I arrange our annual awards event and regular host evenings. Before coming to HSFC I worked with young people for 15 years in a variety of roles including a Connexions Personal Advisor and Educational Support Assistant. I love working with young people, supporting them in their transition into adult life. The rewards in my job come from working with a great team and watching our students mature during their time with us, going on to fulfil their potential.

Lesley Van Der Werff

In my role as International Student Co-ordinator I provide administrative support, care, guidance and welfare to our International students. I work closely with both students and their host families to ensure that whilst studying at Hartlepool Sixth Form College, students are happy, settled and successful both academically and pastorally.

I liaise with outside agencies, including the Home Office, UK Visas and Immigration and IELTS in compliance with immigration regulations. Extracurricular activities are organised for students such at monthly visits and trips to local places of interest and events held at College. Host evenings are held twice a year to maintain strong relationships with both hosts and students. DBS checks are completed for all hosts and rigorous checks are made in advance of allocating students.

Previously I worked for National Westminster Bank for 20 years before leaving to have my three children. Subsequently I retrained to become a teacher’s assistant, starting at primary school level, then secondary and eventually I arrived at HSFC working in learning support. I then moved across to assisting our International students 8 years ago.

My current role is varied, interesting and extremely rewarding, my job satisfaction comes from knowing we are doing everything we can to achieve academic excellence and prepare our International students to progress into higher education.

My job is to provide support to International students at Hartlepool Sixth Form College by monitoring their academic progress as well as making sure they get the most out of their studying experience here in the UK.

I work with all International students closely by checking their daily attendance, tracking their progress across all subjects in accordance with their learning aim, ensuring that they integrate into and contribute to the college community, and reporting their performance to their parents.

Apart from this, I teach A Level Chinese and Conversational Chinese to both International students and local students. It is my responsibility to raise cultural awareness amongst student from home and abroad to create mutual learning opportunities within and outside the college.

Prior to joining HSFC in 2016, I have been focusing on working with Chinese nationals in the UK by providing translation/interpreting services and pastoral care to migrant workers and students. My knowledge of Chinese language and culture, coupled with my experience of studying and working in the UK for the past 7 years have enabled me to bridge the gap of cultural difference effectively. I aim to provide top-quality care to help international students settle into UK college life smoothly and get into their dream universities.
