Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

The CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice is the first stage in academic qualifications needed to become a Chartered Legal Executive and is assessed to A-level standard.

Course Content

The first year of the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice comprises of five modules in order to obtain a Certificate in Law and Practice. These are studied on a part-time basis on Wednesdays each week throughout the academic year. Students will study Unit 1 and compulsory papers Unit 16 & 17 with one law paper and a linked practice paper of their choice, for example, criminal law with criminal litigation practice. In the second year of study, the student will study one further law paper with a linked practice paper and the compulsory law papers for the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice. Through CILEx courses it is possible for many people to become a Chartered Legal Executive: such as legal support staff, mature students, school leavers, those looking for a new career or returning to work/ education after a break.

Chartered Legal Executives are qualified, experienced lawyers specialising in a particular area of law. They have their own recognised status and role within the legal profession and benefit from a responsible and rewarding career.

What Qualifications Do I Need?

You will ideally need to have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or otherwise some experience of working in practice.

Assessment

The course is assessed by way of; unseen examinations for the law modules; unseen examinations with pre-release materials for the practice modules and by coursework for the professional skills modules.

Progression

In the third and fourth year of study on successful completion of the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, the student can progress to Level 6. On completion of the Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma combined with the appropriate qualifying work experience, students qualify as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives; i.e a Chartered Legal Executive. From the position of a Chartered Legal Executive further progression is possible by ultimately qualifying as a Solicitor by taking the Legal Practice Examinations.

Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice

This is the next level of progression on the academic part of qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx).

Course Content

Upon completion of the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, you will commence the Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice. Through CILEx courses it is possible for many people to become a Chartered Legal Executive: such as legal support staff, mature students, school leavers, those looking for a new career or returning to work/ education after a break.

At Level 6 you will need to study a total of four modules one of which must be a practice paper and you will need to study a law paper that is linked to that practice paper. For example, if you study Criminal Litigation you would need to do Criminal law as the linked law paper or if you do Civil Litigation as your practice paper you may do Contract and/or Law of tort as your linked law paper.

What Qualifications Do I Need?

You will ideally need to have completed the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice before you commence the Level 6 programmes of study but it may be possible to commence the level 6 programme prior to that. Or otherwise, you can study single subject diplomas taking any option within the level 6 course as a stand alone module.

Further study: The Tort and Contract modules can be followed up with two further subjects to make up your complete set of four modules. Completion of the Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice combined with the appropriate qualifying work experience would enable you to qualify as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives. (i.e a Chartered Legal Executive). From the position of a Chartered Legal Executive further progression is possible by ultimately qualifying as a Solicitor by taking the Legal Practice Examinations.

Graduate Fast Track Diploma

This is the next level of progression on the academic part of qualifying as a Chartered Legal Executive through the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) for students who have already obtained a qualifying law degree (LLB).

Course Content

Upon completion of a qualifying Law Degree from any University, you can commence the Graduate Fast Track Diploma which involves undertaking three Level 6 Professional Higher Diploma in Law and Practice modules. Through this CILEx course, it is possible for law graduates to become a Chartered Legal Executive.

For GFTD you will need to study a total of three modules one of which must be a practice paper that must link to a law paper that you studied on your Law Degree. For example, if you study Criminal Litigation you must (and will) have studied Criminal law as the linked law unit on your LLB.
